This trip was quite a few years ago, 2004 but I have never written about it.
I am a member of the Ulysses Club which is a social club for the over 40's who share a common interest in motorcycling. You can find more details about the club at www.ulysses.org.au . Though the club started in Sydney, Australia it has slowly grown to be Australian wide and extend overseas, even beyond New Zealand.
This trip was a Sydney Branch Odyssey (an annual get together) which was held near the Snowy Mountains. Well to us Aussies, they are mountains but the the rest of the world they would be the Snowy Hills by height comparison. This link will give some ideas and you can explore that website for further information.
I travelled the road alone on the occasion. I had always seen the turnoffs to Captains Flat when driving through the area and as I had a bit of spare time, I took one of the turnoffs to discover what was there.
Captains Flat is an old mining town, the road in from the north (Sydney side) is quite good. It was a awhile ago but I am sure the road on the southern side to Bredbo is still gravel / dirt road. The road surface was good but if you do not like gravel road riding, don't travel this route and stay on the highway.
Some scenes around and of Captains Flat.
After exploring the old site and reading up on the history, it was time to journey onto Bredbo to rejoin the highway to Cooma.
Our accommodation for the weekend was the Buckenderra Holiday Village. Comfortable digs from which to go exploring the Snowy Mountains.
The road thus far:
Here are some on the road and roadside scenes from the weekend.
There was a close call during the ride when a Ducati rider coming in the opposite direction let the Ducati return to it original side of the road through a corner and nearly took out the rider leader, me. Close but we both survived the close encounter.
A great weekend with fellow mature riders, in age that is. At the end of the weekend we all went our own ways home.
Equipment:
Kawasaki 1000GTR
Tankbag with maps.
Some knowledge of the area from earlier rides.
Warning, it does snow in winter in this area so this ride is best done Spring to Autumn.
A Ride to do again in the future.
