Motorcycle Touring South Africa - Communiqué November / December 2014.

From my Friend Joe at Due South Motorcycle Tours.

Greetings,
I trust all is well in your neck of the woods!  You may have noticed a month skipped on the ‘Communique’…
This end Due South has enjoyed two superb rides from the end of October through till the end of November.  A big thank you to my American guests on the ‘Cape Conquest’ tour and the lovely review from Vance (BMW MOA) on Tripadvisor.
Last weekend I rode home after the ‘Lowveld Legend’ tour which was well appreciated by my first ever… Greenlanders… The chaps were amazing guests and loved getting up close and personal with Big Game in the Kruger Park mid-tour, the roads and scenery were as always appreciated as was the food and drink.  We managed to dodge most of the summer rainJ

Tour Focus – ‘Epic SA Tour (18 days)’
This is our longest set tour.  South Africa is an incredibly diverse country with amazing scenery and wildlife, the tour is aimed squarely at those with a little more time wishing to taste this diversity and see as much of the country as possible.  The tour covers approx. 6,000 km and includes 3x countries and 7 of 9 Provinces… Scenery ranges from Highveld Plains at approx.. 2,000 meters above sea level up into the twisty mountain passes of Lesotho (‘Roof of Africa’) and down into the rustic, arid but incredibly beautiful Great and Little Karoo’s.  A few days spent in the Sub Tropical ‘Wild Coast’ and ‘Zululand’ with its rolling hills skirting the base of the Drakensberg Mountains and into the mountains of Swaziland (‘Switzerland in Africa’).  Big Game Viewing is a highlight with Three excursions: Kruger National Park (Big5), iSimangaliso Wetlands (UNESCO Wildlife Heritage site) where the Game Drives stops for s pot of snorkelling and a beach ‘Braai” (BBQ).  In the Cape, Great White Shark Cage Viewing (Gansbaai), brings the viewer up close to ‘Jaws’…Next ‘Epic SA’ Tour 03 to 21 March 2015… bookings open…

SA News – Wild Horses
Kaapsehoop is a small sleepy village less than 50km from Nelspruit (Mbombela) overlooking the Barberton Basin.  The ‘camp’ was established around 1880 when a myriad of travellers from all over the globe flocked to South Africa to stake their claims in the lucrative goldfields of the Lowveld.  Barberton, Pilgrims Rest and Kaapsehoop being central to their fortune hunting.  However once the mega gold reef was discovered on the Highveld, the word soon got out and most dropped what they were doing to rush up to the new found camp up on the ‘Reef” (Johannesburg) to stake their claims.  The legend goes that these fortune seekers released whatever horses they could not take with them into the lush vegetation surrounding the mining camp.  Due to the altitude above the Barberton basin the area was conducive to avoiding the heat and Tsetse Fly which caused havoc during those pioneering days taking the lives of both oxen and men.  These hardy horses have since proliferated in these mountains and have become synonymous with the village of Kaapsehoop with several hundred running free in the countryside and often seen in the village itself… in a word ‘magnificent’…

Nelson Mandela
It has been a year since the passing of Nelson Mandela.  Over this past year we have paid homage to the man with an image and quotation… Rest in Peace… ‘Madiba’
