Destination - Echuca, Victoria, Australia. - My road trip to attend a family reunion in 3 parts. Part 01 - Getting there and around town.
The extended family called and it was time for a reunion. Though its a family reunion, I am not really a family member, more like a ring-in who was always there.
The reunion officially was actually on the other side the Murray River from Echuca at Moama but I and my wife had not been to Echuca for over 30 years so it was a good time to revisit.
First some background:
Located on the banks of the mighty Murray River, the twin towns of Echuca Moama are the closest point of the Murray to Melbourne - just a 2.5 hour drive.
Echuca Moama represents not only a bygone era with horse-drawn carriages and woodturners but it also showcases all the conveniences of the modern era. The historic Port Precinct is recognised as one of Australia's finest heritage icons and is home to the largest riverboat fleet in the world - Australia's Paddlesteamer Capital.
The iconic wharf has been recently meticulously restored. Enhanced by new red gum walkways along the riverbank, there are many opportunities to view the Murray River and all its activity, and the brand new Port of Echuca Discovery Centre (opened 14 December 2013) is a great way to get up close to Echuca Moama's unique history.
