What of the 'Best Laid Plans'?

30 and 31 August I was planning bring you a story with pictures and videos of a Victory test ride where 2 of my fellow riders and I where taking Some Victorys for a test ride north to Port Macquarie.

All has not gone well and I find I will now be in hospital having part of my colon removed with a tumor attached to it. This should be the end to it as they have not found any secondary cancers.

I was lucky if I can use that term. The tumor was found when I went to hospital with abdomen pains and a shadow appeared on the CT scan which the doctors investigated.

But, I am not writing this today to ask for pity and sympathy as I as I said am a lucky one.

There is a link with the story as I have just discovered, the company, Polaris who makes Victory Motorcycles also makes the new Indian Motorcycles and here in lies the links.

Indian Motorcycles in Australia are a major sponsor of Blue September. www.blueseptember.org.au

Why BLUE? Blue is for men and we lose too many of them to prostate, lung, skin, bowel and testicular cancer.

In 2014 Blue September, will, once again be raising funds for awareness of cancers that affect men and cancer research. Early diagnosis and research are the two ways to beat cancer and so any money raised for Blue September goes to those two pursuits. If you would like to get involved take a look at some ideas on the website or please get in touch with us by clicking here or call 1300 300 817.

Here's what Indian Motorcycle Australia has to say:

Indian Motorcycle is proud to announce their involvement with Blue September which raises money and awareness to fight prostate, testicular, bowel, skin, lung and other cancers affecting Australian men. Indian has signed on as the major sponsor this year helping to add to the nearly 3 million dollars already raised since inception six years ago.

Peter Harvey, Indian Motorcycle Australia’s Country Manager said the company was delighted to support such an important cause.
“When the opportunity arose we didn’t hesitate. Men who are 40-plus are the highest risk group - which also represents most of our customers.”
“If we can help get the message out to this demographic while also supporting research and early diagnosis, it is well worth it,” Mr Harvey said.

Indian Motorcycle has donated a 2014 Indian Chief Vintage, valued at $31,495 to the cause. Entrants can log onto www.blueseptember.com.au to explain in 25 words or less why they or a special person in their life deserves to win the prestige prize.
Blue September raises funds for Australian Prostate Cancer Research and Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

The campaign has attracted high profile support from former Australian Idol judge Mark Holden, the Carlton’s Chris Judd, former AFL coach David Parkin, former rugby League great Lote Tuqiri, singer Reece Mastin and Sam Stynes, widow of former AFL great Jim Stynes.

Australian Indian Motorcycle dealers will also be getting behind Blue September. Visit any dealer to buy a Blue September wristband for just $5 or jump online to see what else you can do to raise awareness and much-needed funds.

The success of Blue September – the brainchild of Melbourne’s Mike Chapman - has spread across the globe to the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. He said the campaign has a two-pronged approach:
“Firstly, early diagnosis is vital. Men all too often present to the doctor too late with symptoms. Awareness through PR and media efforts helps change that.
“Secondly, cancer research is key.  If you are diagnosed, funding ongoing research leads to better treatment options and outcomes,” Chapman said.

 Some sobering facts:
- In 2014 it is estimated that over 122,000 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer, more than half are expected to be males.
- Australia has the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world.
- In recent decades cancer mortality rates have fallen due to vital advances in research.
- We can make a difference. At least one in three cases are preventable. Thousands of men's lives can be saved by healthy lifestyle decisions. The more men are aware, the greater chance or survival.
