I have taken this from the Transport for NSW - Centre for Road Safety site.
It makes for interesting reading if you ride or are considering riding in the state of New South Wales.
As I find other interesting aspects in the site, I will post them.
If you want to do your own research click on the link on the first line or the picture.
Maintaining a three-second gap, scanning the road and setting up are some of the riding tips that can help motorcyclists avoid danger. Riders need to be aware that speed, alcohol and fatigue can all increase the risk of having a crash and being injured.
With advances in anti-lock braking systems, riders can improve their safety by choosing one of the increasing number of motorcycles and scooters that offer the option of ABS.
The Centre for Road Safety develops initiatives and practical solutions in consultation with motorcycle riders and groups including the Motorcycle Council of NSW, the NSW Motorcycle Alliance, Australian Motorcycle Council, NSW Police Force, Local Government and Shires Association, Motor Accidents Authority, NRMA Motoring & Services, RMS, and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Reduce risks for a safer ride
With motorcycle riding more popular than ever, saving riders’ lives and preventing injuries is a critical road safety challenge. As motorcycle riders are more exposed, they run the risk of more serious injuries if involved in a crash. With strong support from motorcycle groups, the Centre for Road Safety and RMS have developed measures to improve motorcycle rider safety, incuding:- State-wide advertising campaigns targeting rider knowledge and behaviour, as well as driver awareness of the presence of motorcycle riders
- Signs on popular scenic routes where motorcycle crashes are more frequent, including the Royal National Park, Putty Road and the Wollombi Loop north of Sydney
- The NSW Centre for Road Safety Consumer Ratings and Assessment of Safety Helmets (CRASH) involves the testing and assessing of motorcycle helmets for safety and comfort
- A Graduated Licensing Scheme for motorcycle riders
